Voting Question: How to use headhunters when looking for a new position?

Hi, I am currently employed, but am looking to switch positions into a private company (I work for a consulting arm in public accounting). I have been applying online, and when I can through people I know. However, I have only been working for three years, so I do not have a very large business network (at least of people with any sort of pull). I am using one head hunter now, and haven't really looked into using more than one because I didn't want to many people involved. Is it recommended to use more than one headhunter at a time? I am eager to see what new opportunities are out there. However, I actually like the headhunter I am working with, which is truly rare, so I didn't want to spoil the relationship by working with another one on the side.  more

Hi All: Just got a job, actually a poster from DICE , however I have some recent experience starting a job and didnt get paid after two month and the company itself claiming to be in the business for 16 years and all the office setup was nice ... I worked there for 3 weeks realized something was wrong, finally I think I am lucky enough came out with a pay check after two months, I think the boss did that on purpose this position is suppose to be a outsource consulting position where I got sent to another company to be their IT person for number of months, and upon getting hired I will be traveling to this client's East Coast location, this company I will be working for has no web site, no web present at all actually, but the VP and president told me they are only really doing referrer business not really marketing themselves that way, also the company has outsourced its HR function including payroll thus I will be paid by this company with HR specialty, I mean how do I start checking out this company or what type of question is fair for me to ask now I am even worry about the laptop and blackberry they going to give me , what if there is a "modified device" built-in that I should not be taking onto an airplane ?? what if they will not pay for my trip .... for now I can only trust them until I got a chance to visit their client to see if they are real I am wanting a job but not at the expense putting myself and my family in a bad situation or danger can you provide some comments or suggestions , thanks JBLH  more

Voting Question: How do you find web design and development clients?

I have 12 years of experience working in web design and development. I used to work on small consulting projects in the begining, but for the past 6 years I've worked full-time for a single company. I'd like to start my own consulting business, but I'm having trouble finding new clients. I've advertised on Craigslist.org and other "classified" sites. I've found a few clients this way, but not consistantly enough to sustain myself full time. I've been looking into different advertising methods. What are some things that have worked for you? AdWords? Formums? Any ideas?  more

Voting Question: Do you know if this is legal?

Ok, so I received an email today. It was talking about a business proposal. I am sure its a scam, but it could be real; either way I am not going through with it. What is explained in this email seems to be illegal, what do you think. The email read: Kind Attention Pls, I am the Bill and Exchange manager of a prime Bank in Cote d'Ivoire. I am writing to seek your cooperation over this business deal. In my Department, I discovered an abandoned sum of (US$ 12 Million) In an account that belongs to one of our foreign customers who died along with his entire family in a plane crash that took place in Kenya, a National of your country and contractor with an oil servicing company. Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin or business associate to come and claim his money because it cannot be released unless somebody applies for it as next of kin or business associate to the deceased as indicated in banking guidelines but unfortunately, all his supposed next of kin died along with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim. You can read more about the crash on visiting this site:- http:/ /www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/africa/07/20/kenya.crash/index.html <http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/africa/07/20/kenya.crash/index.h> It is therefore upon this discovery that I now decided to make this business proposal to you, to release the money to your account as the next of kin or business associate. The Banking law and guideline stipulates that if such money remains dormant after 8 years, will be transferred into the Bank treasury as unclaimed fund. all I require is your honest cooperation as a foreign citizen to enable us see this deal through. I guarantee this will be executed under all legitimate arrangement that will protect from any breach of law. I will like us to share this money mutually on two equal halves between me and you. I will indulge you at this point to understand that this is privileged information and must be strictly confidential. If you can handle this with me, reach me for more details. Thanks. Kosses Lumoh. Resolved Question: Business Advice Please!?

OK So a startup company which I have been doing some freelance work for (I'm a designer) have offered me a 2% share in their company in exchange for occasional work. This startup company is basically a website which sells computer peripherals, much like Misco and Dabs etc. This 2% (non liable) will pay a yearly dividend at the end of every tax year. In exchange I think they are looking for me to create the occasional banner advertisement and generate a weekly HTML email (Not much work once you have the basic template designed) and to consult them about improvements to the site including rankings, search engines , anything for promotion etc... I'm wondering what business heads advice to me would be, I'm thinking it's a good idea although I could end up losing out on time if it doesn't take off. Looking at the profits of Misco and Dabs etc though there is a big market for what they are doing! They're coming back to me with a full proposal about the work they want me to do this week, and I said I'd get some advice first, so if anyone's got any pearls of wisdom, do tell! :) Cheers  more

Resolved Question: Business Idea - feedback needed?

I currently work for a financial services company as a Compliance principal. I'd like to eventually start my own business, along the lines of consulting. My Question is: If there were a INDEPENDENT (not associated with any financial firm) business who provided non biased services with the intention of protecting individuals & families from being taken advantage of by the financial service reps, would that be something you would pay for? I would meet with clients and review their financial information, looking for any "unsuitable" investments or recommendations. I was thinking this could be particularly beneficial/helpful for the elderly, who unfortunately, are often the ones who get take advantage of the most. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.  more

Voting Question: starting two new businesses in the fall... need some (non-legal) general advice?

Hi all, I'll be starting a new business this fall doing web design and auto cad consulting work. I need some advice on how to approach separating the finances for these two operations, and my personal finances as well. \ I will have some contractors working for me and personally, I will mainly be concentrating on the web design aspect of the business. I've been thinking of organizing two different LLCs, but I would like to keep the paperwork and accounting costs to a minimum. Should I just organize one LLC in the mean time and worry about a second after my company grows, or? Basically my main concern is whether or not it will be too hard to separate the two entities finances down the road. thanks! this summer I am going to spend time developing the web sites and contact lists for my operations, and organizing services and price lists as well as drafting up legal documents. any other advice would be greatly appreciated (i won't consider it legal advice). p.s. who has the best small biz bank accounts for small transactions? im going to need a merchant account so i will def. need a small biz checking account. You make some intereting points and I will definitely note them. however, it is not all that difficult to maintain an LLC, it's basically one piece of paperwork and I can organize it the same as a DBA. Web design and auto cad consulting will just be two facets of the business. I will also have some other marketing portals that I will maintain that bring in $14/day in advertising revenue from AdWords. I've been doing this a while -- but it's been a few years and I need to update my CSS and PHP skills. The main thing I am concerned about is the age of the company, because age reflects stability and I willl be more likely to get revolving credit in the future. It is basically one form for an LLC, some minutes you need to manage every week, and finances. You get an EIN reseller number from the IRS which is the same as a SSN, but for a small biz. Since I wil be maintaining web servers, as WELL as web design, Iwill need a reseller number to get parts with no tax.  more

Voting Question: Unemployment claim by consultant in 1099?

I am small business owner. Two years back i employed one of my known contacts as a consultant and paid in 1099. In June 2008, we terminated his contract. Recently, we got an mail from unemployment stating that we are to be audited. On calling them up we found that the consultant has appealed against us asking for unemployment benefits stating that he should have been paid salary but we paid him in 1099. We had a clear consensus that this is a consulting opportunity. They had send an earlier mail sent to a wrong address which we never received to appeal the claim. Now, they want to audit. We had been running our operations according to the books, what i am worried is that we getting penalized for no fault of ours. we are growing company and cannot afford any ill steps like this. Please advise.. Thanks for the clarifications, we did provide him office space and gave him the flexibility to work any time. I have some communication that states it's a contract. The releival letter he is also mentioned as a contract signed by him. During the course of his contract, i did givee him roles and resp so that our team is clear. Looks like he is using that as well. What will be the process nnow  more

Resolved Question: Which small businesses (under 100 employees) generate the biggest revenues?

Anyone can answer this question, but please provide a link to a reputable source of information about revenue and employee head-count. I am not so much as looking for a "winner", but for a general array of small companies that have huge revenues. I'm wondering if there are particular trends in industry verticals (e.g., car dealerships, consulting firms, etc.) I'm looking for revenues, not profits or margin. I'm also not looking for pithy platitudes. Just provide me with small business names and their revenues.  more

Resolved Question: How much should a small business spend a year on bookkeeping/accounting/tax consulting?

Hello, I currently have a small fitness consulting business. I had my bookkeeping & accounting done with an accounting services company last year. At the end of the year they even handled 1099 tax paperwork for my 6 subcontractors. I handled the rest of my tax paperwork with a separate private contractor. The problem with he bookkeeping/accounting is how much I spent - about $2,000. My concern is - Is this too much for a small business? I don't have time to do this all on my own and I want to make sure my bookkeeping/accounting is done accurately. I just don't want to spend a fortune on it. Thank you in advance.  more

Voting Question: Best way to advance my career?

Some quick background. I'm 28 years old with no college. I am currently a Professional Services Manager for a small software consulting company. I have been with the company for over four years; I started as an entry-level developer and quickly converted to business analyst. My primary functions have included: working with new and existing clients to gather requirements, design software systems and document implementation plans, application testing, project management, and end-used training. When our director left two years ago, I took over (although I was only made "manager"). Since then I perform many of the functions I already mentioned, however I am also now responsible for managing a team of five programmers/analysts and managing all client projects at a high level (including resource scheduling). I got into this industry after high school by fooling around with Microsoft Access and learning relational database theory and a little programming. I have no formal certifications or training. It has been a bit of a struggle getting my head above water with all of my professional responsibilities over the last few years but I feel that I finally have a good handle on things. Our team is working more efficiently and unfortunately the economy has slowed down our workload a bit. At this point, I would really like to invest in my future and I'm doing research on my options. I would like to be a CIO or Director of IT eventually. My biggest problem is that I greatly detest the idea of going to college part-time. I don't mind school, but I don't think I can take all of the non-industry-specific classes I'd have to sit through as well as the amount of time it will take. However, if college is far and above the best option I have, I'll have to consider it. The other options I'm looking at are various certifications - PMP (Project Management Professional) or any other Microsoft or other industry certs. I want to be very open-minded about this and would greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thank you for your time.  more

Resolved Question: Starting a Tech Consulting Business... I think?

So, I am recently in a position where my full time contract is not being renewed due to financial hardship on the part of the company. They wish to go with an outside and less expensive option. Now, to make a long story short, I wish to be that option. I know the system, and the people, and I know how to run anything they need run because I built it. My question I guess is what is the going rate for offsite network administration, and onsite on-call patch ups and installs. I know this is a regional thing, So Cal USA is where I am at. Where should I look, how does one even quantify the kind of services in question? (Networking, Linux, Windows, Mac and a variety of handheld systems, printers, phone systems, things what run on electricy in general)  more

Voting Question: Just moved to Portland, have a TX address - can I avoid state income tax if I register my business in TX?

I'm starting a computer consulting business in Portland, OR. I love it here, but the taxes are just too high for a one person business. I still have my Texas address, and I'd like to know if I could get my LLC in Texas and then just have my Oregon customers write me checks without any issues. Also, I'm required by Apple to have a $1,000,000 liability insurance plan in order to have a business. Do you think I'd have to do that in Oregon as well as Texas, or just in Texas since that's where the 'HQ' will technically be. I'm 20 years old, an entrepreneur and I'm just trying to avoid taxes so that I can build this company before I move onto other ventures, I'm no some huge tycoon tax cheat. Voting Question: What are your suggestions to make a resume shines when you have an unstable work history?

I had 8 jobs over the last 10 years. I can justify all terminations and have excellent references: 4 of them were term or consulting positions, one of the job has been terminated as the company went out of business, one where I have been fired by an abusive boss (I sued the company and won my case easily as they were bad mouthing me and terminated my position for no legitimate reasons to support it), one that I resigned as security and health measures were really deficient and my actual job where I'm now only working part-time as the company has financial problems and the employer is ready to provide very good references. I had 8 interviews over the last 3 weeks and they all turned me down for my "unstable work history". Among them, there were some term-work agencies. So, I wonder if there are any solutions to improve my image and secure a stable position?  more

Resolved Question: Are CEO's just not down with the mainstream American?

By VINNEE TONG, AP Business Writer Vinnee Tong, Ap Business Writer – Fri May 1, 12:07 am ET NEW YORK – U.S. companies remain generous with the perks they give to CEOs, including some that are unfathomable to the average American worker: chauffeured cars, bodyguards, club memberships and free travel in company jets. The median value of these and similar perks rose nearly 7 percent in 2008, according to an Associated Press analysis of regulatory filings from 309 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500. The increase came even as overall CEO compensation fell 7 percent to $7.6 million. Perks rose despite a public backlash against such benefits, which many investors and lawmakers deem excessive. They argue well-paid executives should cover the costs of life insurance, charitable donations and financial planning themselves, especially as companies struggle with falling profits, slumping stock prices and massive job cuts. Even some compensation consultants are saying enough is enough. "Those are things the average person, the average Joe, doesn't have, so we're saying, don't give them perks," said Paul Dorf, a managing director at pay consultant Compensation Resources Inc. But plenty of companies are keeping the spigots open. Occidental Petroleum CEO Ray Irani, for example, received $400,000 worth of financial planning, part of a $30 million pay package in 2008. To put it another way, that $400,000 in financial planning is more than the total annual household income of the vast majority of Americans. Occidental spokesman Richard Kline said the comprehensive financial planning helps Irani to "keep his complete attention on the company's business." The median value of perks — which is the midpoint at which half of the executives received more and half less — was $170,501 in 2008, up from $159,586 the year before. Only three CEOs in the AP survey received no perks in 2008. And perks made up a bigger percentage of total compensation, rising to 2.25 percent in 2008, up slightly from 1.95 percent, the AP's analysis found. The biggest earner of perks in 2008 was Johnson & Johnson CEO William Weldon. His perks package was worth $3.9 million, about 16 percent of his $23 million in overall compensation. Included in his perks package was a $3.6 million payment to a retirement plan, about $154,000 in personal flights on the company jet and about $26,000 for a car and driver. Only one CEO saw his entire compensation paid in perks in 2008: Richard Fairbank of Capital One Financial Corp. ($68,344). He received a car allowance, insurance, health care and home security. Some companies went beyond that. Cablevision Systems Corp. offered top executives free cable TV, free high-speed Internet service and use of the company travel department to book personal travel. Defense company Halliburton Co., meanwhile, has two separate programs to match charitable donations and yet another that boosts political giving. Fort Worth, Texas-based XTO Energy gave $3.4 million to Baylor University to help build a new sports complex. It was the second installment of a total $6.8 million pledge made in 2007 to supplement now retired CEO Bob Simpson's own $3.2 million donation to his alma mater. XTO's generosity extended to an unnamed school that Simpson's children attend. It got a $775,000 donation in 2008, the fourth installment of a $3.1 million gift. A company spokesman did not return a call for comment. On the other hand, some companies are increasingly using so-called perk allowances, basically cash that executives can dip into at their liking for the perks they want. For example, Tyco International CEO Edward Breen was given a $70,000 cash perk in 2008 while Reynolds American Inc. CEO Susan Ivey got $29,000 in cash to replace an old executive perks program. While plenty of companies were still willing to dole out generous perks, compensation advisers say there has been a slight pullback in certain benefits that seem to incite the most public outrage. Ira Kay, director of compensation consulting for Watson Wyatt, called perks a major "irritant" to shareholders. Some companies are changing their perks policies. Verizon Communications Inc. will no longer offer free jet travel to CEOs once they have retired, starting with its current chief executive. Past CEOs can still fly for free. "Companies are looking for stuff that isn't central to their pay programs," said David Swinford, chief executive of the compensation consulting firm Pearl Meyer & Partners. "Optics are very critical right now."  more

Resolved Question: Will General Electric subsidaries NBC, CNBC, and MSNBC ever report anything negative about Obama?

General Electric Corporation owns a wide variety of businesses. The company produces -- take a deep breath -- aircraft engines, locomotives and other transportation equipment, kitchen and laundry appliances, lighting, electric distribution and control equipment, generators and turbines, and medical imaging equipment. GE is also one of the preeminent financial services companies in the US. General Electric Capital, comprising commercial finance, consumer finance, aircraft leasing, real estate, and energy financial services, is its largest segment. Other operations include the NBC television network. One of General Electric's largest divisions, GE Energy serves utility, industrial, and governmental customers worldwide, supplying products such as compressors, wind turbines, generators, and nuclear reactors. It also provides equipment that supports oil and gas distribution, and services ranging from consulting and field engineering to environmental monitoring and product lifecycle management. The General Electric CEO is openly a Obama supporter and he wants cap and trade to pass. Why? Not because it is good for the environment, but it is good for General Electric's bottom line. So will these networks ever report anything controversial about Obama?  more

Resolved Question: This question is posed to people working in the fashion design industry & clothes manufacturing?

I want to start a clothing manufacture and retail business but i have no fashion qualifications. I just know what kind of clothes I like. I will need to pay someone to manufacture those clothes for me. However I want the clothes to be chic and stylish and very well made. Do you think I will need to consult a fashion designer, or do you think its possibly to show a clothes manufacturer the clothes i want made and have them make them as I want them, taking influence from the catwalk, and pieces created by other clothing companies. Is this unrealistic? Please when you state your answer, please let me know what industry you work in.  more

Voting Question: How do you start a business?

Do you have to sign up the company you want? How do you get employees, don't you need a building? Does the entrepreneur make the product, and how do you get it out there? What if you want to make a company in the gaming industry? How do you get started, and how do you make a product in the gaming industry? How do you get people to buy it? If you want to sell your own videogame, doesn't it need to have a console?..and wouldn't you need a bunch of people buying your product before you can consult with a console company, to take your game and put it on their console? I don't know! I have no idea how business works, I'm only a 7th grader, thinking about what she's going to do with her life. Because I don't want to be one of those people, who have all this fun and don't take the time to think about what they're going to do in the future...and by the time they do, its already to late. All I know is, you get money when you run a company..and you make up a product, I think?  more

Resolved Question: Who really is Barack Obama?

In his autobiography, "Dreams From My Fathers", Barack Obama writes of taking a job at some point after graduating from Columbia University in 1983. He describes his employer as "a consulting house to multinational corporations" in New York City, and his functions as a "research assistant" and "financial writer". The odd part of Obama's story is that he doesn't mention the name of his employer. However, a New York Times story of 2007 identifies the company as business International Corporation. Equally odd is that the Times did not remind its readers that the newspaper itself had disclosed in 1977 that Business International had provided cover for four CIA employees in various countries between 1955 and 1960. The British journal, Lobster Magazine – which, despite its incongruous name, is a venerable international publication on intelligence matters – has reported that business International was active in the 1980s promoting the candidacy of Washington-favored candidates in Australia and Fiji. In 1987, the CIA overthrew the Fiji government after but one month in office because of its policy of maintaining the island as a nuclear-free zone, meaning that American nuclear-powered or nuclear-weapons-carrying ships could not make port calls. After the Fiji coup, the candidate supported by business International, who was much more amenable to Washington's nuclear desires, was reinstated to power – R.S.K. Mara was Prime Minister or President of Fiji from 1970 to 2000, except for the one-month break in 1987. In his book, not only doesn't Obama mention his employer's name; he fails to say when he worked there, or why he left the job. There may well be no significance to these omissions, but inasmuch as business International has a long association with the world of intelligence, covert actions, and attempts to penetrate the radical left – including Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) – it's valid to wonder if the inscrutable Mr. Obama is concealing something about his own association with this world.  more

Resolved Question: Consulting/Non Profit/Business?

I own a small computer repair company. Work out of my home. Now, I would like to grow my business, perhaps offering computer repair classes to people in recovery. (I am in recovery myself). I am thinking of approaching various halfway houses and programs in the area about my idea, once it's finalized. My problem is, is that I do not know how to charge for fees. At some point, I would like to go non profit, but that is a huge undertaking at this time. I would like to make this a full time thing(as close to possible, that is), so to totally do this for no compensation will not get my bills paid. Any ideas? Again, this is a new idea, so go easy. Dont want to charge excessive fees nor lose my house. Just need some guidance on fair fees. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Question in LAW .. what are the possible legal issues ?

I HAVE THIS QUESTION FOR A SUBJECT IM TAKING (LAW) PLEASE HELP ME .. Mat is an owner of KAYU ENTERPRISE that sells household furniture from woods. He came to consult you on several legal matters as below: Jonathan is Mat’s old friend who was recently admitted to Mental Hospital for certain treatment. Yesterday he offered Mat a very good deal to provide security guards and security system services for Mat’s business. The price was so cheap, but Jonathan imposed a term that he or his security company will not be liable for any loss or damage caused by the failure of his security system or by negligence of the security guards. What made Mat interested was that Jonathan told him that his service will be available as long as Mat wishes. Mat asked your opinion as to whether or not he should take the offer. Advise Mat as to all possible legal issues in the above case based on contracts law and relevant case law.  more

Resolved Question: Isn't this proof that Obama is a very bad President, probably the worst in American history?

A CRISIS OBAMA WON'T WASTE By DICK MORRIS Published on TheHill.com on April 7, 2009 This economic crisis is too useful for Obama to want it to end. When Rahm Emanuel -- and later Hillary Clinton -- spoke of never letting a good crisis "go to waste," many people were shocked. But now Obama seems to embody the corollary: that the crisis should continue until he has thoroughly milked it to reshape American politics, society and the economy. Like Faust, he seems to wish that this "given moment" will "endure forever." Unlike Faust, however, he will not lose his "life and soul" to such a wish. He'll sacrifice ours instead. First came the "stimulus package." With only about $185 billion of its $800 billion in spending to be spent in 2009, Obama clearly never intended the spending to be about stimulus but wanted the need for a stimulus to trigger the spending he wanted anyway. Then came the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funding, often forced down banks' throats. Now comes word that even as banks want to return the money, the Treasury is making them keep it. One source at a TARP bank reports that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is insisting that banks go through their "stress test" before refunding the TARP money. As Stuart Varney speculates, in The Wall Street Journal, Obama wants the banks to keep the money so he can enforce his regulations on them. Now comes Geithner's plea for extra regulatory powers and Obama's concession to global economic regulation at the G-20 summit. Both moves are game-changers for any major American business. Geithner wants the power to take over any business -- presumably in any field -- whose failure would imperil the national economy. Today it's banks, brokerage houses, car companies and insurance firms. Tomorrow? Who knows? And Obama agreed to agree on international "high standards" for the regulation of all "systemically important" companies to be promulgated by the new global Financial Stability Board (FSB). The United States, occupying one of 20 chairs on the FSB board (21 if we count the EU), will come to a consensus with other central bankers from the G-20 nations on what these regulations should say. Then the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve and the other regulatory arms of the U.S. government will impose them on our economy. (Some have objected that Congress needs to be consulted, but as long as the agreements are "voluntary" and the U.S. agencies are merely "asked" to impose the regulations, no further grant of congressional authority is needed. But, of course, there will be nothing voluntary about the administration's demand that the agencies implement the coming FSB directives, no matter how intrusive they may be.) And, finally, there is Obama's delegation of a total overhaul of the tax code to a commission headed by Paul Volcker with a mandate to report back in December of this year. So with the tax code totally changing, Europe about to formulate regulations for our economy, the U.S. government empowered to take over any large company, the deficit and spending reaching unbelievable levels and the feds insisting on continued control of banks, what businessman in his right mind is going to invest in anything? How could even the most foolish optimist pull the trigger on a business investment without knowing the tax consequences, the regulatory framework and the policy of the banks on lending? But Obama knows all this. He knows that his steps will delay economic recovery. But he wants these changes, not as means to an end, but as the end itself. And he is determined to get them passed and set in stone while the rubric of "crisis" justifies his doing so. He is not unlike a leader who takes his country into war, knowing that by "wagging the dog" he can reinforce his power. But ultimately, does Obama care if he is reelected? Doesn't he know that he needs a good economy to extend his mandate to eight years? Yes, of course he does. But he probably figures that he can turn the economy around as Election Day 2012 draws nearer and reap all the credit then. In the meantime, no good crisis should ever go to waste. IT IS GOING TO BE A MIRACLE IF THE COUNTRY SURVIVES THIS GUY.  more

Resolved Question: Isn't this further proof that Obama is a major disaster as President & will be the worst President in history?

OBAMA'S WORST JOBS-KILLER By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN Published in the New York Post on April 1, 2009 More than anything else, business needs a predictable environment if it is to create jobs. Changes in the regulatory environment and the tax code make it almost impossible for businesses to make investments. Yet President Obama seems to ignore this reality. Each day's news brings another bold and far-reaching proposal to change the fundamentals of the US economy. And each time he indulges his personal ideology with such a pronouncement, businesses all over the world cut back on their planned investment until the dust settles. Most incredible was the fact that he chose the middle of a deep recession to announce a major tax-code overhaul. Stressing how far-reaching the changes might be, he appointed a commission headed by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker to report back by early December on what the changes should be. Assuming Obama will need several months to figure out which of its recommendations to adopt and Congress will take several more months to enact its own version, the announcement effectively leaves business up in the air for at least 12 more months -- uncertain of the tax consequences of any potential investment. Who in their right mind is going to invest significantly in new plant, equipment, services, personnel or anything else? How can you consider doing so, when you can't know how the tax code might penalize you? And, in the same week, Obama announced that he'd seek to regulate nonbank institutions, including those he deems to be "too big to fail" lest their collapse injure the economy. Which businesses will be included? Nobody knows. We may not know even when the law is passed. As companies grow or merge or acquire one another, they may step over the invisible line and become "too big," and thus subject to Obama's regulation. How can a firm plan on expansion without knowing what increment in its size will attract regulatory scrutiny? It's hard enough to anticipate possible anti-trust complications -- and the Justice Department is at least usually willing to consult before any merger on what its attitude will be. Obama's leaving everybody guessing. Growth demands investment, and investment demands stability. So the more Obama stirs the pot with his proposals and potential changes, the more he retards exactly the investment he needs to get the economy moving again. At least Obama has toned down his rhetoric, no longer echoing JFK's comment that "all businessmen are SOBs." But his actions do more than his words ever did to hobble any recovery. So why insist on pushing these "reforms" now? Because, while it might be wiser to wait until after the economy's out of recession, it may then become politically impossible to get them through Congress. So he's determined to use the sense of panic to enact his changes now. Again, he's putting his ideological agenda ahead of the requisites of national economic recovery. We needed a pragmatic pilot; we elected an ideologue instead.  more

Resolved Question: Help on my NIGHTMARE tenancy agreement!?

Here is a letter I've sent to my council but it may take some time for them to reply and I would be gratefull of any help! April 1st 2009 To whom it may concern, I was wondering if anyone could help me with some information on whether I have any rights to get out of my 12 month short hold tenancy agreement. I live in a student house with 3 others. Our letting agents are Charles Lawson Lettings and our landlord is Mr. Zulifqar Hussain. Our term is 12 months and we are just coming up to out 6 month in the house and after a really terrible week we are now desperate to get out. About 3 weeks ago we received a letter to say that our house was being repossessed on the 31st of March as our landlord Mr Z Hussain had not being paying the mortgage. After consulting Charles Lawson’s they admitted that they new about this back in September before they had even let out the property to us. In fact Mr Z Hussain was already being taken to court! So Charles Lawson were continuing to tell us the house was not being repossessed and kept asking us to pay our rent and gave a sob story about Mr Z Hussain being made redundant and having no money. However after an internet search it turns out that Mr Hussain actually owns the Letting agents and from the article attactched has been involved with several failed businesses and has in the past gone into liquidation and then has been starting up new businesses under similar names. On the Friday before the proposed eviction date my father called the bank and solicitor who were in charge of the repossession and they told us that it was still going ahead as the arrears had not been paid. The bank told us also that we should not have been in the property to start with as the mortgage was not buy-to-let. We rushed to Charles Lawson’s who said they would sort this out but to come back in the afternoon (they also used the phrase ‘no comment’ any time we enquired about Mr Hussain owning the agency). My housemates went over to the letting agency to find that they had shut the shop. Finaly on Monday afternoon we got a fax to confirm that the landlord had paid his debt over the weekend. Could you tell me whether there is any chance that we would be able to get out of this tenancy agreement we dont want to risk any more incidents klike this and the house in really crumby anyway? Thank you very much in advanced. Best regards Tilly Turbett Attached: Oxford Mail Article about Mr Hussain, Emails between the bank and my father dated 27th of March 3 days before the proposed repossession ______________________________________... From: Hayley Watts [mailto:Hayley_Watts@wragge.com] Sent: 27 March 2009 11:36 To: *********** Subject: FW: 9 Glanville Road, Oxford. (W&Co Ref: 1989816) Dear Sir, As my colleague advised you on the telephone the eviction is still scheduled to continue on 31.03.09. I understand the rental contract is a 12 month contract but the Mortgage company are not in breach of this and are within their rights to take possession of the property. Also the account is not a buy to let product so the tenants should not be in the property to start with. Also to confirm the tenants will need to vacate the property before the scheduled eviction. Unfortunately as you are not party to the proceedings we are unable to confirm any account details to you I.e when the proceedings were commenced. Regards Hayley James C Penny staff re-employed after liquidation 12:07pm Friday 27th February 2009 By Maggie Hartford » OXFORD estate agent James C Penny has gone into liquidation with debts of more than £400,000. The four staff were made redundant but were then almost immediately re-employed by a new company called James C Penny (Estate Agents) Ltd, according to the report from liquidator Bridge Business Recovery. The new company is controlled by a former director, who had resigned from the original company on February 1. Creditors were told the assets were estimated at £1,800, while the company owed £105,429 to HM Revenue and Customs from employees’ PAYE, National Insurance and Corporation Tax, plus £71,634 VAT. Meanwhile, the National Association of Estate Agents said it was taking action over James C Penny’s claim on the company’s website that he is a member of the association. NAEA chief executive Peter Bolton King said: “We have already sent a letter out. James C Penny, according to our records, has not been a member for some years.” The company was owned by Israr and Zulfiqar Hussain, of Bartlemas Road, Oxford, and by James C Penny, of Eynsham. According to the liquidator’s report, Istikhar and Israr Hussain held office and were helped in day-to-day management by other family members. The main creditor is Istikhar Hussain, who is owed £299,875. He is the only director who remains on the register at Companies House. The other directors, Zulfiqar and Israr Hussein, resigned on February 1. Zulfiqar Hussain, the former company secretary, whose whose address at Companies House is given as 11 Granville Road, east Oxford, is involved in the two new companies which were set up on January 14. On January 28, he became a director of Jame C Penny (Lettings) Ltd, and of James C Penny (Estate Agents) Ltd. Zulfiqar Hussain is also a director of another Oxford estate agent, Charles Lawson and several other dissolved companies with the Charles Lawson name. Robin Swailes, of North Oxford Property Services, said he had teamed up with residential agent Thomas Merrifield to bid for the James C Penny name from the liquidator, Danny Wright of Bridge Business Recovery. Mr Swailes said: “If any other estate agents would like to help, they should call the liquidator.” Asked for a comment, Istikhar Hussain said: “I’m no longer involved after the administration.” No one from James C Penny was available to comment. Resolved Question: Can I still save my job and reputation?

I am having big problems at work. I work in a big corporate company in UK in a team of 10 programmers. I employed here from 5.5 years now. I have very strained relationship with my new boss( 1 year old) now. Reasons: 1. I had time keeping issues last year because of my impending divorce case, bad health. I was on some medication that resulted in hot flashes and sleep deprived nights. So, about 10 times in 8 months I was late for work. 2. But, this year, I was absolutely puctual and just ask for 1 day off in the morning. My boss then complained about my time -keeping. This was first time we spoke. 3. It is now written on my pdr which I was unhappy about because I was un-well last year. 4. Then, I worked with a new senior colleague who bullied me because I am smarter than him. I am working with the company from 5 years and I am very quick with the business processes. He is a very rude person and was really insulting me. We had a big fight in front of the boss, and when I complained about bullying, he put blames on me instead and said that he was angry with me because i have poor performance. My boss seem to take his side because he has 20 years of experience. This resulted in me getting upset with my boss too. I feel so annoyed that he couldn't see my side of things. Now, my boss is making my life difficult. he has consulted HR and his immediate boss and other managers too. He seems to be potraying me as someone who is not disciplined, has performance issues and has bad behaviour. I am so angry and annoyed with this situation. i work so hard, and i am a very capable person. Still, I am being treated like this. Now, my boss asks keeps close eye on me. Shows me eyes if I go for tea break where as other people even take 1 hour off for lunch. I am more and more working flat hours and working on one of the most useful projects. what can I do about this? I think my boss will sack me or create a situation to make me redundant. what do you say?  more
