I recently had an interview with the hiring manager from the federal government. I went to his interview and I think I did average, so and he called me back like 10 days after the interview and said that "unfortunately, we do not have a position for you at this time, we felt that you didn't state what we are looking for" but then he left his new phone number and told me "My number has changed, feel free to call him if I have any questions". First of all, I submitted my resume through my school's career fair and I did not know what position I was going to interview for, I did request an electronic copy or a link to the job descriptions prior to the interview but I got no replies, so I went to the interview with nothing. I could always use a similar position but then I thought it may not be relevant to the actual job at all. After the interview, I was given a piece of paper describing the current projects and the benefits package of the position. But still, I don't know what do I do for the job, he claimed that it's a rational training program with various departments for 2 years. Now he is leaving me his new contact number, what could I possibly do? Should I just go ahead and call him, what can I say? Someone please help, I am thinking that if he ain't gonna hire me, he wouldn't leave me his new contact number, right. moreResolved Question: Please help with homework......?
As a project manager, you are looking forward to completing your current project and then taking a European vacation with your bonus money. Shortly before bonuses are expected, however, you realize your team just missed reaching the financial goal for the quarter. As a result, you and your team will not receive bonuses. You must notify your manager and your team members about this development. You must also inform your travel agent you are unable to take the trip. I have to fill in a chart: Manager Teammates Travel Agent Purpose Audience Tone Content Now, how do you fill in the table? describe how you would approach communicating with the Manager, the Teammates, and the Travel Agent based on the scenario. Your job here is to provide a thorough description of the strategies that you would use for the messages. Other tips: When conveying bad news, organization is key; remember that we should start from our audience’s point of view moreResolved Question: How can I tell from a job interview that this is a place I want to work?
I just left my job which can only be described as hell on earth. Pretty much from the get go I knew this wouldn't be a place where I wanted to be long term. Where to start: The department head was a passive-aggressive, spineless, clueless buffoon. My direct supervisor was only interested in me being her buddy that she could share her complaints with but had no skills whatsoever on how to supervise/manage anyone or any project. Since this was a department (and agency wide) company that focused on an ethnic specific population, those employed there-especially in my department were shown HUGE favoritism. Didn't have to show up on time, didn't have to do complete their tasks nor be remotely intelligent/professional. The HR Manager would go as far as to hire people who where not qualified per job description but being of a certain ethnicity. It was heard around her office that she didn't like certain employees (or didn't want to hire them) because they were not of this ethnicity. She even tried to illegally fire me! She wasn't even my manager or in my department! I tried hard for so long (18 months) to make it work but in the end I had enough. I figure that you can't fix stupid and it was a waste of time to try. Every time I came home to share with friends what happened that day, I get a look of complete shock as they have never heard of such insanity. So the question is: How can I tell in an interview if the company is a hell hole (like this one) and/or the people I would be working under are a joke? I would really hate to repeat this mistake and I realize there will be instances of crap in any job but this experience was just unreal. moreResolved Question: which cover letter is better? help?

I have worked at my current company for 5 months. About 3 months into the job, my manager gave an initial review that he did not think things were going too well and put me on a performance improvement plan. Later, she told me things had gotten better, but I still needed to improve. Last week, I was given my first official review and the results said that I did not meet expectations. They also mentioned to me that they would be having a discussion with HR on making a recommendation on whether I could stay, be transferred to a new job or be fired. They are meeting with HR next week and I am sick to my stomach trying to guess what the outcome will be. I have been extremely busy at work and keep getting assigned more projects, so I wonder if that sounds like I will be fired. At the same time, I was told to work with another woman who is my senior as a coaching mechanism. However, I feel as if they are having me slowly transition my projects to her temporarily, while they find my replacement. There is a job description on our company website that is very similar to mine. Recently, the rest of my team moved with the exception of another girl and me. Even though the moving and relocation process is still happening, it is weird to me that I have still not been told whether I will be moving or not. One other person at my levl was not moved either. I asked and was given a wishy-washy answer. He said he would be talking to HR to make that determination. My boss has been EXTREMELY nice to me recently. Is this a good or bad sign? moreResolved Question: What would be Job descriptions for "Project Manager on Voluntary basis?
Hi, I'm looking for job and duties description for job "project manager on voluntary basis" in one NGO. What do you think, a voluntary project manager duties, jobs and roles in one NGO? Thanks as advance. moreResolved Question: What would you do in this position?
Ok, I've worked for this company for almost 5 years now. I am an hourly employee, but in a very important position. My title is "Inventory Clerk and Special Projects", which most of the time equates to being an Operations Manager. I solve almost all problems and issues for my area in the warehouse and am relied on to provide much needed information to our management team. Recently, approximately 7 months ago they hired a new person for a position that opened up. This person doesn't even perform their job functions as outline by their job description. They surf the internet during work hours and take care of personal business on company time, which in many cases requires them to leave the premises for hours at a time. All of this is done for the most part without managements knowledge. Today I walked into the office this person shares with 2 other employees and they had their bank account information opened on their computer screen. It wasn't my intention to see, but I noticed their direct deposit from the company was more then mine. (They don't even have a job title.) I have never had any write-up for disciplinary problems and can't see the reason for this huge disparity between pay based on experience. Based on this information what would you do in this situation? moreResolved Question: was mistake in experience part in Canadian PR form i mentioned 5 years experience in 1 position instead of 2?

I started a new job in a new state a little over a month ago. I had originally applied for a different position at the company and instead was interviewed for my current job. I figured it would fine for at least a year and then I would pursue opportunities to advance at the same company or other companies in my field. Turns out that the job as I interpreted it from the interview and description is not matching up to my boss' expectations for the position. I was lead to believe I'd be developing and managing projects (i.e. making decisions). After a discussion with my supervisor, I now find my role is to execute tasks without question. Further, my supervisor is a micro manager who admits that micromanaging is part of her management style and something I will need to adjust to. I know my work style, and being micromanaged is not something I think I will ever be able to get used to. It took my a while to land a job and quitting is not something I would do lightly. If I were to start the job hunt again, I'm concerned at how it would look to prospective employers to have left a job so soon. Any advice on how to both cope with the current work situation and explaining this to prospective employers (if I do decide to start applying for other positions) would be greatly appreciated. moreVoting Question: Should I wait to put this on my resume?
I'm a freelance creative professional who also works at a top nightclub on the East Coast. Recently, my manager has asked me to take on two projects that are really out of my typical job description. These projects will be excellent for my job development and great to talk about in interviews when someone asks "Describe a time when you went beyond your job." However, I only work part time at this nightclub at the moment (been there for 2 years) and have been hurting financially. I know I need a better job and need to start sending out resumes again soon. These projects started last week and will take about 2-3 months to complete. Should I put a brief description of them on my resume or wait until the project is done so things don't seem half finished if I get called for an interview before they are completed? moreResolved Question: What experience does this job description want? Hi there- So I am pursuing my MBA with a concentration in Marketing. I have a Masters in Education and no background in Marketing or Business (except for some volunteer exploratory work I have done running my own temporary non-profit). So while I am completing the MBA - I am looking for something where I can learn about Marketing, get my hands into it (get dirty while learning basically), and better yet, have a career in that company. I went on an interview yesterday that I almost felt first unqualified for based on its description (see below: I know nothing about marketing analysis or IT) but they called me in for an interview anyways. Small company - growing fast - small numbers as far as staff for right now. But it is clear they will get BIG. They emailed me for a second interview right after I left - to come in today. Before I proceed forward, I want to be prepared. Thing is that when she described the marketing assistant (which is a new role there), I heard things such as: - Checking the CEO's flights - Managing the office - Making sure the printer doesn't run out of ink - Just making sure the office isn't in "limbo" with some things thrown in like: - Maybe contribute some ideas to the website - Maybe contribute some ideas to our promotional material - Proofread marketing analysis, website, and have strong grammar skills - And randomly asked if I had good math skills so I don't know where that will be used I see the opportunity certainly to grow with a growing company but I am concerned that I am playing a exec. asst role to the CEO for now. I don't want to get stuck there. Basically I am saying that I don't want a Marketing Director job to come up down the road and they hire someone else. That is my goal or even MORE than that. I know the role is new so there are no definitive duties that she can list. It is clear I need to work from the bottom up doing a little administrative work but I want to make sure this supports my career. She didn't really stress assisting the Marketing Manager as much as assisting the CEO. Is this still a good start for someone in Marketing or a company that has just made up a bogus title? This is her description she originally sent me: "This position is brand new. I would say 50% is administrative support to the CEO, CFO and Controller, and the other 50% is working on different types of projects such as marketing (website, brand development, etc), proofreading marketing analysis, IT support and etc… We are looking for someone who is bright, has strong math, computer and English skills. Being that our plans are to grow this company, we need to get the right person in place who can handle a lot of responsibility and grow with us." moreResolved Question: What would be the correct Listen & Win as well as trivia answers for US 99.5 for August 8,2008?

HotJobs Every boss wants employees who do their jobs well. But even among highly competent employees, there are distinctions. Here are 10 tips for making sure you're on the boss's A-list: 1. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Especially at the beginning of your relationship -- that is, when either you or the boss is new to the job -- err on the side of giving your boss too much information and asking too many questions. "There's no such thing as a dumb question," says Marianne Adoradio, a Silicon Valley recruiter and career counselor. "Look at it as information gathering." Don't keep up the constant stream of communication unless your boss likes it, though. It's best to ask directly whether you're giving the boss enough information or too much. 2. Acknowledge what the boss says. Bosses appreciate "responsive listening," says John Farner, principal of Russell Employee Management Consulting. When your boss asks you to do something or suggests ways for you to improve your work, let her know you heard. 3. Collaborate. When your boss has a new idea, respond to it in a constructive way instead of throwing up roadblocks. "Be willing to brainstorm ways to get something done," says Michael Beasley, principal of Career-Crossings and a leadership and career development coach. 4. Build relationships. You'll make your boss look good if you establish a good rapport with your department's customers, whether they're inside the company or outside. Bring back what you learn -- about ways to offer better customer service, for example -- to your boss. This is also helpful for your own career development. "Everybody wins in the long run," Adoradio says 5. Understand how you fit in. Is your boss detail-oriented, or someone who keeps his head in the clouds? "The boss's personality is just incredibly important," says Norm Meshriy, a career counselor and principal of Career Insights. Equally important is understanding what your boss wants in an employee. It may be, for example, that a boss who is detail-oriented will expect his employees to be as well. But a boss who has no time for details may actually appreciate an employee who does. 6. Learn the boss's pet peeves. If your manager has said repeatedly that she hates being interrupted first thing in the morning, don't run to her office to give her a project update when you first get in. 7. Anticipate the boss's needs. Once you have worked with your boss for a while, you should be able to guess what information he will want before approving your purchase order, for example. If you provide it ahead of time, "that's a gold star," Farner adds. 8. Think one level up. You still need to do your own job, of course. But when managers consider who deserves a promotion, they look for people who understand the issues that their bosses face. 9. Open yourself to new ways of doing things. When your boss comes to you with a new idea, don't simply dismiss it. If you don't think it will work, offer to discuss it further in "a mature, responsible, adult-like way," Beasley says. 10. Be engaged in your work. Arguing with your boss over every request is not a good strategy, but neither is simply shrugging your shoulders and agreeing with everything your boss says. "The manager would like to see an engaged individual," Beasley says. That means both showing enthusiasm for your work and speaking up when you see room for improvement. http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles... I had a brief phone interview with the hiring manager for a research company. She asked me what kind of job I was looking for among other questions. I got a call from the recruiter who set up the whole thing and she said I should bring supplementary materials to the interview including course work and other projects. I put together a portfolio/package with my resume and a couple of other one page documents that address the questions I was asked but couldn't elaborate on over the phone. I give a description of the type of job and company I am looking for and what attracted me to the company. I also added relevant college courses to the position, a project abstract and a personality report. I figured most companies have you take personality tests so I brought my own. I am going through hell with my son. He is twelve, and no matter what I do, no matter what my wife or my oldest daughter do, he won’t do his homework. We ground him, we take away all his gadgets, we prevent him from going to birthday parties and other social events that he loves. Other than corporal punishment (which is a place I won’t go), we have tried everything. It doesn’t matter… he doesn’t care. We can't force him to do something he thinks is wrong. And my personal hell is... he is right. My son can listen to the radio and pick up his saxophone and play whatever he is hearing. Or, if his sax isn’t handy, he picks up whatever other musical instrument is around and plays that. But he doesn’t do his homework. I bought him a book about drawing and he gets up at night and reads it and sneaks around the house sketching things. The portraits he does are incredible. The comics he produces are funny, insightful and engaging. Everyone asks him to draw for them. But he doesn’t do his homework. My son is rarely if ever unhappy, and people are naturally drawn to him. He has a great delivery on jokes and has a photographic memory for any piece of pop culture he has seen. We riff on Simpson’s lines all the time, cracking each other up in the process. Then he’ll tell me movies he saw three years ago, shot by shot, line by line. But he doesn’t do his homework. My son is intellectually curious. He loves to learn new things and is always asking me “Why does something work this way?” or “What about that?” But he doesn’t do his homework. My son loves video games. I work at a video game company so I know how long it is supposed to take to finish all the missions in your average next gen video game. My son takes half that time. He holds competitions with his friends where, after he beats them, he shows them all the tricks that he has figured out about how to beat the game. But dammit, he doesn’t do his homework. The other day I insisted that my son finish a piece of homework. I sat down next to him and taught myself math that I never learned in all my years of high school and college (remember, he is twelve). I stayed up until midnight with him, browbeating him the entire time, my anger unchecked. Finally, we completed the problem, which had to do with plotting the parabola of a quadratic equation and reducing the result set to a graph of the system of inequalities. The project was about finding the cross section of a river based on a given quadratic equation. The next morning my son woke early and went down and made his project interesting to him. He put in cartoon characters exploring the depth of the river, and drew a shark (which he labeled with his teacher’s name) about to eat a happy little duck (which he labeled “My Grades”). He drew a fisherman packing gear and assorted other fish and life. These were not just doodles – he actually helped clarify some of the information that he had been struggling with. By drawing the characters he was helping himself understand what the lesson was trying to teach. My entire family was completely enthralled by what he had done. It was not only artistically creative and engaging, it actually helped clear up the very nature of the project. Justly proud, we anxiously looked forward to hearing how his teacher responded. My son returned home from school downcast, shuffling his feet. I asked him what was wrong. “My teacher didn’t like the project, because I put it on the wrong size paper.” I don't have much hair, but I am ready to tear what little I have out at the roots. My son doesn’t do his homework because his homework is stupid. I have spoken to educators and principles and academicians and grandparents and probably a hundred other people , and nobody has given me a decent answer to this question: "Why are you so convinced that my son is going to be an academic or an investment banker?" Because as far as I can tell, those are the only two things that schools prepare kids to be. I have been sitting by my son's side for 7 years, doing his lessons. I believe I can state with the unequivocal clarity of someone that his given valuable time to a task that is largely worthless but required... the homework is just plain dumb. It is boring and condescending and even my son, at the age of twelve, can figure out that the rules are arbitrary, that they are enforced in a haphazard fashion, and that the stuff that he loves (art and music and video games) will be a great future for him and the stuff he hates (math and science) is something he will never compete in, never have a chance at. But school doesn’t care, because school does not have the objective of helping my son produce the maximum amount of value in the future that he will probably encounter. School cares about ensuring that he knows how to take tests, follow directions and can do math that he will never have to care about for the rest of his life. School cares that he can either prove that he is worthy of being in the top 5% that will go on to be homogenized and brainwashed in a top-notch school so that they are almost completely without originality of thought or perspective or that he gets the hell out of the way for those kids that meet that description. School cares that he can be measured and managed, so that he will be a good little cog in a habitual big wheel. As a parent I am caught between two worlds. I am 100% certain that school is doing great damage to his future prospects, but I also know that the game is rigged to be in favor of kids who get the right grades. Because recruiters can’t seem to get off the “experience and education” kick that does so much damage to our society and our children, I know that my children’s future job prospects are being controlled by people who have never once taken a critical look at what really goes into producing value for a business or market. They just know that their client (the hiring manager) told them they wanted somebody from Stanford with a certain GPA. And if they can get that butt in that seat they can then go deal with the next client. I want to focus on what will make my kids successful, on what will allow them to provide the most possible value to their clients, their society and themselves. But I have to focus on what will get them work, even if that will hurt them, society, the companies that hire them and everyone around them. This is the very definition of broken system, the very epitome of how we are driving ourselves off a cliff all in the name of safe driving. moreResolved Question: What to do with this job?

I'm beginning to search for a new job. I've currently been at my job a little over a year (13 months, to be exact) and I've had problems with the position since the beginning. When I was hired, I was told that my position was a new position in the office and that my job description was basically to do whatever my boss assigned me. My boss, in my opinion, isn't qualified for his job nor is he qualified to manage someone else. The entire time I've been here I've had problems with him not giving me work to do. At first I came up with my own projects to keep my busy--my boss had a talk with me and told me that I need to stick to what he assigns me and that's it for now. At about month four at this job, my boss's boss had a meeting with me--she basically told me, "we realize [your boss] is difficult to work for and we don't want you to quit. Please keep me updated on how well of a job he's doing as your manager. We have had complains in the past and would hate to see you leave." My question is, when I eventually put in my two weeks notice to my boss, am I obligated to talk to my boss's boss too, and explain to her that I'm leaving due to his poor management style? Or do I just put in my two weeks notice and not saying anything? My boss's boss is very friendly (she has an open door policy) and I know she would like to hear feedback about my boss's lack of management skills so that she will be aware of the problem when they hire my replacement. Ok I just started a job as a computer programmer and it is very apparent I am no where need the level needed to start at the entry level. The job description said extensive knowledge of perl, PHP, XML, HTML and it is very apparent to me now that I know a lot less than I thought I knew. I had done an internship monitoring a small web page for my local university. There wasn't much code on it. I had added a small questbook using perl, but it wasn't anything fancy. I am completely overwelmed in my new job. Trying to read the code my project manager has is like trying to decipher greek. It is way above my head. I have spent two days looking up commands I don't know, but I can't learn this all until the project is due. I have read and worked on small projects in classes, but nothing this large. It is huge! I am tearing my hair out trying to sift through 100+ pages of code and trying to fiqure out how each module and subroutine fits into the big picture. What should I do? moreResolved Question: Why do all enemies in Console Games have no vowels in their names?
Is it some unwritten geek rule for spotty, overweight developers in dimly lit bedsits, littered with coke bottles and empty family size crisp packets that you just take a normal sounding name and remove all the vowels and add a few q's and z's? I have carpal tunnel; I got a job with a state govt. agency. I had very specific job task descriptions, none of which would necessitate accommodations for or mention of my carpal tunnel syndrome (I can type 75 wpm for hours with no problem, for example). A few months later, I was told to do some straight computer data entry task--a task never mentioned in my job duties or description. (I have a Ph.D. and think straight data entry is a waste of my abilities--but that's another story). I told the manager that I would try my best, but that I had carpal tunnel & I didn't know how much I could do. I was told I HAD to do all that was assigned to me for this particular project. I complained to the HR office, and mentioned my carpal tunnel for the first time, because I was suddenly given a task that could be impacted by it. We had a meeting; I was given a 'stern lecture' that I should have mentioned my condition anyway when I was hired. Was I irresponsible or just using my discretion? moreResolved Question: what could be the job description of a project manager in a building/property construction and maintenance coy
