Voting Question: question for intelligent guys and girls :)?

You are an engineer and the owner of a mid-size engineering firm. You opened your firm in 1980 after returning from a long stint in Saudi Arabia where you worked as an engineering consultant to oil industry executives. You’ve built the firm to a staff of 100 employees. You pride yourself for having built a diverse work force and have hired many female engineers and executives. As a result of your Saudi connections, you have been asked by government officials to meet to negotiate a multi-billion dollar contract for engineering services. The Saudi officials have made it known that no women sales executives may be sent to negotiate the contract. Furthermore, no female engineers may work on the project should the parties reach an agreement. Your Board of Directors and management team have had an initial meeting and unanimously decided that they should not forfeit this business opportunity. However, the company has a policy of non-discrimination on basis of gender. Hence, a second meeting is now scheduled to come up with creative ideas to address this dilemma so that female sales executives and engineers are not discriminated against in their carrier path. Be a participant in the meeting and share your ideas.  more

Voting Question: Can I become a Management Consultant?

I know the question sounds weird, but I didnt know how to word it any other way, hehe Ok, so I am a really hardworker (if I really enjoy what I am doing), takes the initiative, and has great communication skills. Education: BASc(Chem.Eng.) / MBA - University of Toronto MS Chemical Engineering - University of California-Berkley Work Experience: 1 Year with Schlumberger-Field Engineer I really like Management Consulting because of all the problem solving involved, interaction with senior management with other companies (allows me to expand my network), and all the wonderful short-term travel you do(usually only 2 weeks in length). I met a couple of people who worked at McKinsey and one at Boston Consulting Group, all of them say it is a very rewarding career, both financially and personally.Although Schlumberger allows you to travel, you mostly move there temporarily sometimes for a few months, which was fun at the beginning, but then I started getting homesick a little.Plus, offshore rigs are kind of lonely ! Can I become a Management Consultant at one of the top firms (preferably McKinsey and BCG, I heard they were exceptional employers)? What would a salary look like for someone like me ( more than they pay for that position ??? ) ? What do you mean by "entry level"? I have a feeling that I am wrong, but I read somewhere that people with MS or MBA start as Associate Consultants, instead of people who only have Bachelors and start as business analysts. No?  more

Resolved Question: MBA worth $75k or get a Masters of Public Affairs?

I am debating on whether I should invest $75k into an Executive MBA from the University of Texas or about $16-24k into a Master of Public Affairs at the LBJ School (UT also) instead. I was a project manager for 4 years, ran my own real estate investment business/brokerage for 4 years, and now I'm a program manager at the state. I like what I do and prefer not to go back into corporate project management. I plan to obtain my PMP (Project Management Certification) within the next few months. My career goal is continue as a Public Program Manager, perhaps staying with the state for a while, but also having the option of starting my own firm or working as a consultant. In your opinion, would an Exec MBA be worth $75k and two years of classes or would obtaining a Master in Public Affairs (four years of school) and the PMP at $25k combined cost help me achieve my goals?  more

Resolved Question: Should a founder of public school be allowed to sue parents for asking questions?

This was in the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday. Devon charter school sues parents By Martha Woodall Inquirer Staff Writer Several parents at the Agora Cyber Charter School in Devon who asked questions about the school's finances have been sued by the founder and her management company. Dorothy June Brown contends that the parents and the Agora Parent Organization defamed her and Cynwyd Group L.L.C. in complaints sent to the state Department of Education and in e-mails circulated to other parents at the statewide cyber school. The parents say they were just trying to get answers about the relationship between Cynwyd Group and Agora. The cyber school rents its headquarters from Cynwyd under a nine-year lease and pays the firm a management fee of at least 4 percent, according to a services agreement. Brown owns Cynwyd and serves as its senior consultant to Agora, according to school and state records. The civil suit Brown filed in Montgomery County Court on Jan. 21 alleges that the parents made misleading statements "that give the clear but false impression that Dr. Brown is corrupt, incompetent and possibly criminal." The suit also says the parents' association "sought to interfere with Cynwyd's contractual relationship with Agora by spreading untruths about Dr. Brown and by implying that she had improperly used public funds." Brown and Cynwyd are seeking more than $150,000 in damages for libel, slander and civil conspiracy. "The allegations are false," Gladys Stefany of Milton, Pike County, said in an e-mail yesterday. She said she learned about the suit last Tuesday when she was served with papers. 'Civil conspiracy' "When did asking for information that is or should be public information become 'civil conspiracy?' " asked Stefany, who has a 15-year-old daughter enrolled in Agora and is president of the parents' organization. "It is sad that it has come to this, but I'm happy we'll finally have the opportunity to air our case in the open and get answers to our questions." Stefany said the questions did not involve the school's academic program. She said she was more than satisfied with the instruction her special-needs daughter has received. News of the suit left several lawyers and education officials scratching their heads. "I haven't heard of a case of this sort in recent memory," Len Reiser, co-director of the Education Law Center in Center City, said yesterday. Lawyers from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association agreed. SLAPP suit? Angelique Smith of Aston and her husband, Ira, are among the six parents named in the complaint. She said she believed the case amounted to what is known as a "strategic lawsuit against public participation" (SLAPP) and was meant to intimidate and silence critics. "This is really about freedom of speech and freedom of association," Smith said. "This is akin to going to a regular public school and telling the PTA to get out." Brown referred all questions about the suit to her attorney, Wendy Beetlestone. Beetlestone said it was a defamation case and not a SLAPP suit. "In any kind of public discussion, you have to make sure that what you say is true and doesn't bring down the reputation of the person you're talking about," Beetlestone said. She said parents had failed to respond to requests to stop spreading information that she said defamed Brown. "June Brown is a highly respected and innovative educator and has been for many years," Beetlestone said. "When the debate turns to making false statements and doing everything they can to bring her down, she is left with no other option. That's what this lawsuit is about." Brown is the founder of three traditional charter schools in Philadelphia. In 2005, she and Brien N. Gardiner, founder of the Philadelphia Academy Charter School in Northeast Philadelphia, co-founded Agora to provide online home instruction to students across the state. The school Web site listed Gardiner as a co-founder, but his name was removed in May after he became the subject of a federal criminal investigation at Philadelphia Academy and was fired from his consulting position at the charter. The lawsuit against the parents claims Gardiner "had no role in founding Agora and his name does not appear in Agora's application for a charter or in subsequent organizational documents." Brown's lawsuit also charges that Agora parents tried to imply that she "was guilty of some financial wrongdoing on the basis of her association with Gardiner." Records show that Brown and Gardiner did business together. In 2005, they established Cynwyd Group as an educational management company, state records show. In November 2007, the company paid $1.9 million to buy a property at 60 Chestnut Ave., Tredyffrin, that houses the Agora headquarters. The relationship between Gardiner and Brown was severed in May 2008. Gardiner and others were removed from Philadelphia Academy in May. An int  more

Resolved Question: Can someone help me solve this math problem?

I need to solve this problem for school but I am so confused at where to even start. The problem is as follows... The University engaged a consultant to perform a price sensitivity analysis on the willingness (ability) of the families of college-bound students in the tri-state area to "purchase" a college education. The survey technique used two reference points: $430 price/credit hour and $370 price/credit hour. After analyzing the survey results along with population statistics in the region, the consulting firm estimated that approximatley 14,800 credit hours would be purchased at $430 and 17,200 credit hours would be purchased at $370 With the assistance of the University Accountant and the Physical Plant Director, the University management realized that a $330 credit hour fee did not provide sufficient funds to provide teaching facilities for more than 8800 credit hours. However at a $570 credit hour rate, the team estimated that incremental improvements could be made to the physical plant so as to accommodate approximately 15,200 credit hours. The University officials and the marketing consultant agreed that in this first attempt at modeling the credit hour demand and supply relationship, it would be appropriate to assume that the functions were linear. You have been called in as the modeling consultant on the project and have been asked to make a recommendation to the University management team as to the appropriate tuition level so that there are sufficient funds to meet the expected enrollment demand as dictated by the price. 1. The consulting firm estimated that approximately 14,800 credit hours could be purchased at $430 and that 17,200 credit hours could be purchased at $370. Will this information help create the SUPPLY or the DEMAND function? 2. The University management realized that a $330 credit hour fee did not provide sufficient funds to provide teaching facilities for more than 8800 credit hours and that a $570 credit hour rate would only accommodate approximately 15,200 credit hours. Resolved Question: Did this damage Collins project ?

<<Managerial Madness: Micro-Managers provided by: Originally published at Internet.com Micro-management kills projects. Say that loud, say it proud. Good, conscientious workers hate micro-managers; the folks who insist on eyeballing every last "t" to make sure it is crossed and who wish they could require team members to get bathroom passes before getting up from their desks. Now ask yourself this: Are you a micro-manager? Do not be too quick to say no. "In 20 years of doing this work I have never had a manager come to me and say, 'I need help, I'm a micro-manager," says Wally Bock, an executive coach. "They feel they are only doing their jobs." Nobody in the history of work has ever awoken, clapped his hands and said: "I can't wait until I'm at work micro-managing the heck out of this project and my team." So, if you don't know you are doing it, how can you possibly stop? Definition time. What exactly is micro-management? It boils down to insufficient delegation (handing off only the easiest tasks) and/or continually checking in on progress. "Thus, when a project manager states, 'I need you to do 'X' by Friday at 5 p.m.," and calls the person to whom the task was assigned several times a day monitoring progress, the person is a classic micro-manager," says Kimberly Mount, an adjunct professor of organizational psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a leadership development consultant. The classic micro-manager cannot resist meddling at every step in a project. Good project managers parcel out work, then let team members go off and percolate individually and without interference. Not a micro-manager. These lines can be finely drawn, so understand that what makes micro-management particularly treacherous is "it is too much of a good thing," says Stefanie Smith, head of Stratex, a coaching firm. Chew on this factoid: according to Harry Chambers, author of My Way or the Highway: The Micromanagement Survival Guide , 71% of us indicate we are victims of micromanagement. Would your team members say they are in that super-majority? What causes micro-management? Experts point to three drivers: * Extreme detail orientation a.k.a, perfectionism. * Self-centeredness. That is, "[T]he belief you are smarter than the others," says Todd Dewett, an associate professor of management at Wayne State University. * Anxiety. When you are worried that a flubbed project could drive your team's work to Bangalore, India (or from Bangalore to Karachi Â… or wherever), it is easy to fall into eyeballing every step. "Micro-management is a symptom of thinking things are out of control," adds consultant Don Maruska, author of How Great Decisions Get Made . Say that a project manager who doesn't fear possible job loss is delusional bordering on Pollyanna and you may be right, meaning that, in many cases, the building blocks for micro-management have a foundation in reality. But that does not make it a good thing, particularly not when it is exhaustively documented that a micro-manager sucks the enthusiasm out a project team (Who wants to give his/her all when the boss redoes everything anyway?). Even worse. A classic symptom of the micro-manager is that he cannot get his own work done, says organizational consultant Simma Lieberman. So busy supervising the work of others, the micro-manager frequently finds his own to-do list gets ignored. And that is no way to win job security. Taking the Cure It isn't easy to break the cycle of micro-management but it can happen. Step one, says Maruska, is to make a conscious effort to transition from always being the doer into being a manager of others. Focus on getting there and it will gradually come to be. Step two, and maybe a still harder step, says Louellen Essex, co-author of Manager's Desktop Consultant: Just-in-Time Solutions to the Top People Problems That Keep You Up at Night , is to dialog with team members. Ask them: do they feel micro-managed? What kind of supervision and leadership do they want? Of course, they won't immediately open up with honesty so keep prodding. Show sincerity: "I cannot properly manage this project without your input about what you want from a leader." Little by little, team members will spill about how much (or how little) direction they genuinely want from you. A tricky bit is that some team members want a lot of oversight, some want little or none, so for the manager part of the job is knowing who needs how much hand-holding. The last step: don't focus on process, focus on outcomes and results. Inveterate micro-managers stay hung up on process, but the managers who succeed know that, at project's end, all the high-level bosses in the organization care about is what was accomplished. Period. "The outcome is what really matters," stresses Essex. Just keep that in mind and, poof, micro-management proclivities just may evaporate. Author: Robert McGarvey>>  more

Resolved Question: Career Path for a Consultant: Will taking this specialized position limit my options?

I am looking at a senior-level position with a real estate consulting firm. While it's right up my alley, I'm concerned about where I can go with this position down the road as the firm focuses predomintely on the gaming industry (developing casinos, operational analysis, gaming feasiblity, etc). I currently work in an investment bank and focus on hotels, which is a small sector in it of itself but it is what I love and at least allows me to do it just about anywhere in the US. I like this position, which would actually be a promotion, but I'm worried about the limiting industry exposure. Gaming is cool but its really only present in two locations in the U.S., neither of which I ever care to live. The job would allow me to work with some P.E. Firms, Banks, Government Agencies as well Business Organization so it' good exposure but will my skills be seen as transferrable? Can I do this for a couple years, move up in rank and then expect any real opportunities/chocies after? My Fear is that recruiters will focus more on the industry I worked predominately in (Gaming) and less on the actuall skills I'd learn (valuation, feasibility, strategic planning, management, etc). Am I freakin' out or could this truly limit my options in the future?!! Ther's basically TWO QUESTIONS HERE: What kind of positions do consultants usually move on to? And then, more specifically, what can I expect if I take this one? I dont' know any Private Equity firms or investment banks that have gaming departments (especially if I want to stay on the east coast), and certainly not in the NYC area, which is where I'd ultiimately like to be. Help! am I shoottng myself in the foot?! My current company is downsizing, so I need to act fast! For Clarity, I would ultmately llke to do this and then, perhaps get back into the financial world and work with a private equity firm, investment firm, developer, etc.  more

Resolved Question: Which two premiership football clubs best describe the following?

Team A and Team B decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day they felt ready. Team A won by a mile. Afterward, Team B was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Club management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommended corrective action. The consultant's finding: Team A had eight people rowing and one person steering; Team B had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people were steering and not enough were rowing on Team B. So as race day neared again the following year, Team B's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive. Resolved Question: Tax deduction questions?

Could someone please help me with the following tax questions: 1) I'm a business consultant for a large IT management firm. I travel extensively to client locations but also work from my HOME frequently ~ 30%. Company classifies me as "Mobile" employee - either work at client site or HOME. They do not reimburse internet/phone/office equiptment. I don't have a "study" room but work mostly in a corner of my room set up for business work. Can I use some of the "home office" deductions? 2) My younger brother does not live with me but I help him out financially from time to time. He's a recent college grad and unemplpoyed. Could I claim him as a dependant? What would be some rules in order to claim as dependant. He probably wont be filing a 1040EZ. 3) My condo association installed new Green A/C-Heat unit which came out of my condo fee's. Can I claim the Green deductions ~$300? Thanks  more

Voting Question: Company decided to wind down its business ops without paying my consulting salary, what can I do know?

I worked as a consultant for a software company. On my payday, the company suddenly decided to wind down its business operations, without paying my salary. The company's management team simply disappeared, and I found out that a law firm took control of the company, and started the liquidation process. I contacted that law firm and informed them about my situation. A few weeks later, the law firm responded back saying that the company's current assets were only enough to cover the company's secured debt, and briefly I won't get paid at the end of the liquidation. I just don't know what to do right now? Could a lawyer help in this case? Or is there any other way I should follow? I just believe that this is totally the managements fault, and I'm sure that they already knew this in advance, but they simply made me work for free while they didn't have enough money to pay at the end.  more

Resolved Question: Is this how it works lol?

The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day the Japanese won by a mile. The American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommend corrective action. The consultant's finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the American team's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers, and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive. The next year, the Japanese won by two miles! Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem.  more

Resolved Question: Salary Negotiation - Assistanceship?

I am in a major dillema and I need any fruitful advice here. Currently, I have 2 offers which a difficult decision to work with. I received a I.T. Project Manager/Business Analyst role for a 6 digit income and I also received a Business Analyst role in a management consulting firm which pays 40% more. Here are the considerations for the contract position: - The job involves relocation and I am going to be managing a big project - Money is 6 digits - As a contractor you can lose your job in the hour compared to FT employees. - It is 40 minutes from a big city - I don't get benefits - Cost of living his higher For the management consulting firm: - Its a FT position which satisfies my long term objectives - Its in a big city providing me a solid network base (I'm young) - The salary is a 40% lower!! - Cost of living is high What is going through my mind: - In the long run, as a management consultant I will make money - I will build networks in a big city  more

Resolved Question: Talking with various women who don't work?

I am a management consultant in New York with a pretty large firm. I also have twin sons that are 7 months old. I have been struggling in my social life because most of the couples I socialize, either through work or my husband's friends, consist of a stay-at-home wife and a working husband. I have no problem in enjoying talking with the men, but as soon as I left with a group of woman I am uncomfortable and feel out of place. There seems to be nothing to talk about. I enjoy discussing the economy, new technologies, politics, current business news, trends in education, etc. However, the women that I come into contact with seem to have nothing to talk about besides babies. As a mother, I also enjoy talking about my children, but they talk about things and I have no clue what they are talking about or I am just uninterested. If I try to talk about something interesting to me, I often get blank stares, so I usually just stick with the men. Any similar experiences? Oh, I should have mentioned - my kids are in daycare, we have a nanny. I guess I should have said that I don't think all women are like this, but just this group of women. For example, "Oh, your husband is from Taiwan? Is that the same as Thailand?" Ehhh..... And no, I am missing nothing with my children - I am happy with the style of our family life - I wouldn't have it any other way!  more

Resolved Question: Global Warming Hysteria Could Make Gore Richest VP in History?

Since 2000, according to published reports, the former veep has transformed himself from a public servant with around $1 million in the bank to a sparkling private consultant with a net worth estimated to be north of $100 million. He's a senior adviser to Google, a board member at Apple and now a newly minted general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the Silicon Valley venture-capital firm that made billions investing early in Netscape, Amazon and Google. Gore has pledged to hand over his KP "salary" to Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit he chairs. But the gift is more symbolic than material. Gore's salary-his cut of the 2 percent "management fee" that KP partners get on all investments-is typically a sliver of the total compensation that VCs receive. If Gore's profit-sharing deal is anything like the firm's other 23 partners, he's also in line to collect tens of millions of dollars a year. That's because partners carve up 30 percent of the profits if and when the alternative-energy start-ups that KP supports go public or are sold. (Kleiner Perkins declined to comment on Gore's compensation, but his communications director, Kalee Kreider, confirmed that he plans to donate only his "guaranteed income" to charity.) Should Gore's prospecting unearth a clean-energy gold mine the size of Google-which earned billions for KP partners-his share of the loot could make him U.S. history's richest ex-veep. Resolved Question: Is the press beginning to see through Al Gore's global warming scam?

Is the press beginning to see through Al Gore's global warming scam? A brief article posted at Newsweek's website offers hope that the media might finally be recognizing the former Vice President could be this decade's Ken Lay. For those that have forgotten, Lay was the CEO of Enron (h/t NBer well99, emphasis added): Since 2000, according to published reports, the former veep has transformed himself from a public servant with around $1 million in the bank to a sparkling private consultant with a net worth estimated to be north of $100 million. Granted, this is just a blurb at Newsweek's website. However, at some point, journalists have to start exploring the wealth that Gore is creating for himself while he tells regular citizens to walk to work in order to save the planet. Resolved Question: What is this saying?I am lost i know one of the airlines is buying the other i think.?

ATLANTA - UAL Corp.'s United Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. have been discussing a combination between the nation's second- and third-largest carriers that would keep the United name and the corporate headquarters in Chicago, The Associated Press has learned. ADVERTISEMENT Shares of both airlines surged on the news. There is a sense of urgency in the talks, which have been going on for some time and continued as recently as a week or so ago, an official with knowledge of the talks said Wednesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly. "They want to get something done before a new administration gets in and so they get the clock ticking on" federal regulatory approval, the official said. The exact financial details of the transaction being discussed are not clear. But the talks involve United being the name of the combined airlines, the headquarters staying in Chicago and Delta's Atlanta hub being an operational center for the two carriers, the official said. One possible scenario involves Delta CEO Richard Anderson being the chief of the combined airline, the official said. Delta also has had talks with other airlines, the official said, without specifying which airline or the status of any such talks. A spokesperson for Chicago-based United did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment. Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton declined to comment. Shares of Delta rose $1.92, or 10.2 percent, to $20.67 in afternoon trading. UAL shares gained $4.20, or 9.7 percent, to $47.70. Delta said in a statement Wednesday that its board has established a special committee to work with management to review and analyze strategic options for the airline. Top executives have said recently they are trying to determine whether consolidation makes sense for Delta. When Anderson was named in August as Delta CEO to replace Gerald Grinstein, there was immediate speculation in the investment community that Delta and Northwest might eventually merge. Anderson is a former CEO of Northwest Airlines Corp. Anderson immediately tried to dispel such speculation, telling Delta employees he wasn't coming to Delta to facilitate a deal with Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest. Delta's statement Wednesday was responding to pressure by a hedge fund that owns 7 million Delta shares to consider combining with UAL. Pardus Capital Management LP said in a letter to Delta's top management on Tuesday that it is "imperative" that the company undertake a merger transaction with another airline in view of soaring fuel prices and what it described as the increased risks of going it alone. "Consolidation is needed to de-risk the industry and time is of the essence as now is the right regulatory environment," said Karim Samii, president of Pardus, and Shane Larson, a principal. The hedge fund executives said they had determined since making a similar recommendation in a Sept. 7 letter that "the most attractive and practical combination would be a Delta and United Airlines combination." It cited figures from a consulting firm estimating that the benefits of such a pairing would be about $585 million and said a combined Delta-United would boast a broader network than any other combination. Pardus also owned 5.6 million shares in Chicago-based UAL as of Sept. 30. Pardus executives said a Delta combination with Northwest would produce even bigger benefits of about $1.5 billion, primarily from combining the smallest hubs — Detroit/Cincinnati and Memphis/Atlanta. "However, Northwest may not enable Delta to complete the breadth of network that business travelers require, resulting in the need for a potential follow-on transaction at a later date in order to achieve the same breadth of network that UAL would provide out of the box." Pardus, citing information provided by the air transport consultancy Simat, Helliesen & Eichner Inc., said a third potential combination, with Continental Airlines, would produce no synergies and would raise other challenges. Robert Mann, an airline consultant in Port Washington, N.Y., said United's broad Pacific network and Delta's huge Atlantic presence would complement each other. However, he said, combining fleet information systems and labor could pose challenges. The biggest problem would be that neither carrier has any recent track record of integration, he said. "I would see this as a very risky move from the standpoint of the actual implementation," Mann said.  more

Resolved Question: Did anyone hear about this? Russell Simmons calls Barack Obama a mouse?

"Simmons: "I think about one-fourth of his campaign contributions came from small donations made over the Internet, even though he collected more than any other Democratic candidate from Wall Street people. So at the end of the day, he's controlled, too. That's my point. He's a mouse, too, like everybody else." It continues to say "Simmons is more right than he may care to know about Obama. Let's start with his second point - "progressive" Obama's mousy reliance on corporate political cash. "Obama's reliance on deep-pockets supporters is certainly part of why he opposed an amendment to the Bankruptcy Act that would have capped credit card interest rates at 30 percent." “The junior Senator from Illinois denounces the corrosive influence of private political cash on U.S. democracy while cozying up to Chicago's notoriously corrupt Big Money Mayor Richard M. Daley (with whom he shares the same high-priced campaign consultant (David Axlerod) and raking in campaign largesse from wealthy world-capitalist interests.
